YMCA to hold Swim-A-Thon Monday

A Swim-A-Thon will be held at 7 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at the Providence YMCA-Ball Family Center, 8601 Parallel Parkway.

Sean Cassidy, a lifeguard who will become a swim instructor at the Y, will begin the Swim-A-Thon on Monday.

Cassidy is passionate about water safety, and he is doing something about it.

“The No. 1 thing we can do to keep kids safe around water is teach them to swim,” he said.

Cassidy has pledged to swim laps until $1,000 is raised for children in Wyandotte County.

Author writes murder mystery

A former resident of Kansas City, Kan., Clyde Calvin Glandon, has written a crime novel set in Kansas City, Kan., his hometown. Glandon uses the pen name “C. G. Calvin” in writing “Wyandotte Sonata.”

Lee Hunter, a private investigator from Los Angles, returns to Kansas City and takes a job with a security company. Suddenly he finds himself immersed in a murder mystery.

KCKCC Community Choir to perform at winter choral concert

The Kansas City Kansas Community College Community Choir is preparing for its annual Winter Choral Concert this weekend.

The concert is at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2203 Parallel Parkway in Kansas City, Kan. Admission is free, however donations will be accepted for vocal music student travel opportunities to St. Louis, Mo., Chicago, Ill., and Denver, Colo., in the spring. The concert is open to the public.

The choir will perform selections from Handel’s Messiah with a professional string quartet. In addition, the KCKCC Chamber Choir will perform a cappella selections ranging from early American hymns, baroque church music, Russian church music and African-American spirituals.
