A free fireworks display is planned tonight at Pierson Park, South 55th and Douglas, Kansas City, Kan.
Sponsored by the Turner Recreation Commission and the Unified Government, the free professional fireworks display will begin after dark, expected to start around 9:45 p.m., at Pierson Park.
Those attending may bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. Personal fireworks will not be allowed in the park.
Air Force Airman Chase L. Brown graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Brown is the son of Charles Brown of Kansas City, Kan.
He is a 2012 graduate of Turner High School, Kansas City, Kan.
Utility crews struck a two-inch natural gas main line near the Oak Grove area this morning. Nearby residents were evacuated.
According to a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department, workers were boring under the sidewalk about 9:11 a.m. June 19 at 55th and Locust when the gas leak occurred.
About 37 residents were evacuated within a 150 feet of the leak according to the spokesman.
Kansas Gas Service employees worked to expose the punctured line while fire crews continued air monitoring in the area. Gas Service capped off the leak to make repairs.
Residents then were then told they could return to their homes. In all, they were out of their homes about three hours. There were no injuries, the spokesman said.
The estimated dollar loss was $2,000 for sidewalk repair, according to the Fire Department.
