Bonner Springs and Edwardsville are planning Christmas tree lighting ceremonies tonight.
Bonner Springs will hold the annual Candy Cane Christmas starting at 6:30 p.m. with a parade. The parade will travel from 140 N. Nettleton to Oak Street, then Second Street, ending at Centennial Park.
The mayor’s tree lighting will be held immediately after the parade, estimated about 6:45 p.m. The Bonner Springs Elementary School Choir will perform holiday carols.
Held in conjunction with the activities will be the Feed His Lambs annual chili supper from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the community center gym. The cost will be $2 per bowl, with proceeds benefiting the Feed His Lambs programs.
After the lighting, Santa Claus will be in the community center gym to talk with kids. Hot chocolate and cookies will be provided, and the choir will perform holiday selections.
Also in conjunction with the Candy Cane Christmas, Vaughn Trent Community Services will collect canned goods and nonperishable items to fill Christmas baskets for those in need.
Edwardsville has its mayor’s tree lighting ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at Edwardsville City Hall, 690 S. 4th St.
The Edwardsville Elementary School Choir will perform. Hot chocolate, cookies and treat bags will be available at the community center after the lighting ceremony.
Those attending are asked to bring a new or slightly used children’s book to donate to this year’s charity drive.
Parents may bring their cameras to take their children’s photos with Santa Claus.
A Missouri man was sentenced Tuesday to about 12 years and nine months in federal prison for robbing a bank in Overland Park, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said.
Allen J. Williams, 25, Kansas City, Mo., pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., to one count of armed robbery and one count of using a firearm during a robbery.
In his plea, he admitted that on Feb. 27, 2014, he and two co-defendants robbed Inter-State Federal Savings at 8620 Metcalf in Overland Park. They entered the bank about noon and held employees at gunpoint before fleeing with stolen money.
Co-defendant Randy A. Cornelius, 22, Kansas City, Mo., was sentenced to 4.75 years, and Williams’ twin brother, Alvin J. Williams, 25, Kansas City, Mo., was sentenced to 9.5 years.
Grissom commended the Overland Park Police Department, the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department, the FBI and Assistant U.S. Attorney Tris Hunt for their work on the case.
A Nissan 370 Z was westbound on I-70 east of the Bonner Springs exit when it started to hydroplane on Monday morning, according to a Kansas Turnpike Authority trooper’s report.
The driver lost control of the vehicle and the Nissan slid off the road into the right ditch. It went down a steep embankment, hitting milepost sign 226, a Kansas Turnpike Authority fence, and trees, before coming to rest, the trooper’s report stated.
The driver, a 33-year-old Lawrence, Kan., woman, was not injured, the report stated.
A passenger in the Nissan, a 16-year-old Lawrence, Kan., girl, was injured and taken to a hospital, according to the report.
The accident occurred about 8 a.m. Nov. 30 in Wyandotte County.
