The Kansas City T-Bones (20-19) couldn’t overcome a three-run first by the Gary SouthShore RailCats (17-21), as Kansas City struggled to capitalize on a number of opportunities and lost 3-2 on Friday night in Gary, Indiana.
KC had its share of chances early to put runs on the board, but the T-Bones left six runners on base over the first three frames, failing to score in the early innings against Gary starter Justin Sinibaldi (1-2). The T-Bones left the bases loaded with just one out in the second.
A three-run first for Gary, with RBI singles by Andy DeJesus and Raymond Jones proved to be all they needed on offense to squeeze out a win.
The T-Bones finally cashed in and got one back in the top of the fourth when Dylan Tice beat out an infield chopper to bring home Mason Davis.
Daniel Nava tacked on another run with his first home run of the season in the seventh. However, that was it for KC as the T-Bones threatened in the ninth but did not score.
One of the bright spots of the night came from starting pitcher Henry Owens (1-1). At one point recording seven straight strikeouts, he finished with 10 on the night, allowing three runs over five innings of work.
The bullpen worked three scoreless innings on a combined effort from Marc Magliaro and Robert Calvano.
A diving play by Danny Mars saved a run in the fifth, keeping it close for the T-Bones. Yet the offense couldn’t produce with runners in scoring position, leaving 11 total runners on base.
The T-Bones will continue their three-game set against Gary at 6:10 p.m. Saturday, June 29, in Gary, Indiana, as Erik Manoah Jr. (2-1) will get the start for the T-Bones. The game will be on the T-Bones Broadcast Network at http://mixlr.com/t-bones-baseball/.

Constellation art project to be Saturday
A star constellation art project is planned from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. First, there wil be a presentation about the stories about constellations. Then children will create their own constellations using sidewalk chalk.
Writing time offered at library
“Come Write In,” which offers writing time to writers, will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at the West Wyandotte Library, Conference Room C, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kansas. Writers may brainstorm, write and work toward their word goals. Writers may drop in.
KCK Street Blues Festival to be Saturday
The KCK Street Blues Festival will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at Lavender’s Circle L Ranch, 3924 N. 49th Drive, Kansas City, Kansas. Benefit event planned
A benefit for the Police Athletic League will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. June 29 at Holy Family Hall, 513 Ohio Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Tickets are $15 and include a wine tasting, sausage sandwich and live music by the Brian McCarty Band.
Bonner Blast to be Saturday night
The Bonner Blast will be from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at the Kelly Murphy Park at 129 Elm St., Bonner Springs. This event is sponsored by the Bonner Springs Parks, Recreation and Senior Center and the city of Bonner Springs, Kansas. A Little Miss and Mister Firecracker Pageant and ice cream social will begin at 8 p.m. Pre-registration for the pageant is available at Bonner Springs City Hall. Sporting Kansas City’s long and winding road swing will conclude Saturday with a visit to rivals Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
Kickoff is slated for 9 p.m. with three hours of live television coverage beginning at 8:30 p.m. on FOX Sports Kansas City, FOX Sports Midwest Plus and FOX Sports GO. Set to play their fifth straight away game in all competitions, Sporting (4-5-7, 19 points) have moved within two points of playoff positioning after defeating Columbus Crew SC last Sunday.
The 1-0 triumph gave Manager Peter Vermes’ side its first MLS road win of 2019 and its first clean sheet since mid-March, breaking a run of 16 competitive matches without a shutout.
Felipe Gutierrez bagged the decisive goal against Columbus to enter a three-way tie for the team scoring lead in MLS play.
Gutierrez and forwards Krisztian Nemeth and Johnny Russell have tallied seven goals apiece, marking the first time in club history that three Kansas City players have hit seven league goals before the end of June.
Sporting grabbed their away win without the influential services of Russell, who missed out with a hamstring strain. The Scottish international is one of six Sporting players who will be sidelined Saturday alongside Jimmy Medranda (hamstring) and long-term absentees Roger Espinoza, Eric Hurtado, Jaylin Lindsey and Rodney Wallace. MLS All-Star defender Graham Zusi is listed as questionable with an adductor strain.
Real Salt Lake (6-8-2, 20 points) is coming off a 1-1 stalemate last Saturday at the Chicago Fire. Talisman Albert Rusnak found the back of the net for the visitors, notching his team-best sixth goal of the 2019 campaign.
With a three-game MLS road trip now complete, RSL will return to the grounds of Rio Tinto Stadium for the first time since May 24, when they defeated reigning MLS Cup champion Atlanta United FC 2-1.
Led by spirited head coach Mike Petke, RSL boasts a deep attacking corps to supplement Rusnak’s playmaking strengths.
Breakout forward Sam Johnson has scored five goals of his own while Damir Kreilach (three goals, one assist), Sebastian Saucedo (two goals, two assists) and Corey Baird (one goal, two assists) have all done damage in 2019.
Venezuelan winger Jefferson Savarino (three goals, one assist) has also started regularly for RSL this season, but the promising 22-year-old will miss Saturday’s game due to Copa America duty in Brazil.
At the opposite end of the age range, the RSL spine continues to run through 20-year veterans Tim Rimando and Kyle Beckerman, who rank first and second in all-time MLS matches played.
Since the rivalry blossomed in 2013, Sporting and RSL have squared off 19 times in all competitions.
Five of those meetings took place last year when Vermes’ men booted RSL out of both the U.S. Open Cup and MLS Cup Playoffs.
The 2018 Western Conference Semifinals saw Sporting prevail 5-3 on aggregate, winning a 4-2 thriller in the decisive second leg at Children’s Mercy Park behind Daniel Salloi’s brace. The battle served as a rematch of the 2013 MLS Cup, an epic encounter in which Sporting edged RSL on penalty kicks to claim their second league championship.
RSL has held an upper hand in recent regular season meetings at Rio Tinto Stadium, going 6-1-5 in Sporting’s last 12 visits to the venue. The clubs have locked horns 34 times in all competitions since RSL entered MLS in 2005, splitting the series with 12 wins and 10 draws apiece.
