The temperature was 8 degrees at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, with a wind chill of minus 1. Earlier in the morning the wind chill was minus 6. Sam Brownback’s list of priorities and those of Republican legislative leaders as they work through a legislative session now dominated by school finance issues. Two students from Kansas City, Kansas, have been selected to be new student and family orientation leaders for the 2018 spring and fall semesters at Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas. The two Kansas City, Kansas, students are Melanie Arellano, a senior majoring in social work; and Ricardo Zamora, a senior majoring in management. They are among 75 FHSU students selected from a pool of 125 applicants to be new student leaders. The Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools will begin offering free breakfast and lunch to its 5,000 middle school students this school year through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program. CEP is a program of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 that allows schools with high poverty rates to provide free breakfast and lunch to students. This is the second group of KCKPS students to receive free school meals. Last school year, KCKPS began providing free meals to its 13,000 elementary students through CEP. Police have identified the 17-year-old male who died after a shooting Tuesday night on Parallel between 38th and 18th streets. The victim was Jo’Shawn Garrett, 17, a resident of Kansas City, Kansas, according to police. He was riding in the back seat of a vehicle that was eastbound on Parallel between 38th and 18th streets, according to police. There also was an adult male who was shot while riding in the same vehicle. Kansas City Kansas Community College’s No. 9 ranked and unbeaten Lady Blue Devils shook off a sluggish start and rolled to a 90-68 win over William Penn’s JV in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Friday night.
