U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, D-3rd Dist., voted Thursday to pass legislation to lower the cost of prescription drugs for families across Kansas’ 3rd District. The Lower Drug Costs Now Act, H.R. 3, gives Medicare the power to negotiate with drug companies for lower drug prices, and makes those lower prices available even to those with private insurance. “When Kansans go to the pharmacy to pick up their medication, they deserve a fair deal on their drug prices,” Rep. A rate increase was approved Monday for Atmos Energy’s natural gas residential customers. The company had requested an increase that would have raised bills for residential customers about $4.33 per month in the winter and $3.41 per month in the summer, according to a news release from the Kansas Corporation Commission. The increase that was approved Monday will allow 35 cents more per month in the winter and 11 cents more per month in the summer, according to the KCC. A free fireworks display is planned tonight at Pierson Park, South 55th and Douglas, Kansas City, Kan. Sponsored by the Turner Recreation Commission and the Unified Government, the free professional fireworks display will begin after dark, expected to start around 9:45 p.m., at Pierson Park. Those attending may bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. Personal fireworks will not be allowed in the park. Air Force Airman Chase L. KDOT photo The Gibbs Road over I-635 Bridge Replacement Project completion date has been rescheduled with Gibbs Road reopening to traffic in late September 2014, and the overall project work scheduled for completion in mid-October 2014, weather permitting. According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, the start of construction on the project was delayed by several weeks, due to issues related to the advance work on the clearing of utilities. by Mary Rupert People in Wyandotte County seem to be coping fairly well with the high temperatures and heat advisories this week. Kansas City, Kan., Assistant Fire Chief Craig Duke, public information officer, said that there were only three heat-related calls so far during this time. The three were treated at the scene and then transported to the hospital for evaluation, he added. The Fire Department has a plan that will be put into place for firefighters in the event of extreme heat. Duke said personnel are rotated more quickly, and extra apparatus are brought in to relieve the firefighters…

The performance included rhythmic chanting, dancing and drumming with music derived from Brazil and Haiti. “Top our party, New Orleans, if you can,” said one resident of the center.
