Kohl’s Department Stores is sponsoring a Kohl’s Care Scholarship program this year. The scholarships recognize youth who have made a positive difference volunteering in their communities. Nominations for youth ages 6 to 18 will be accepted until March 14 at kohskids.com. Parents, teachers, neighbors or friends may nominate outstanding students who help others. Two from each store will win a $50 Kohl’s gift card. Nearly 200 will win regional scholarships worth $1,000 toward higher education. The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast will meet March 15 at the Hilton Garden Inn, 520 Minnesota, Kansas City, Kan. It will be the 10th anniversary of the breakfast. Guest speakers will be Jean Schodorf, secretary of state candidate; and Sen. Pat Pettey, D-6th Dist., with a legislative report. Kat Anderson of Edwardsville, Kansas, recently participated in a play presented at Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri. Students from the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University recently designed, constructed and performed “Photograph 51” by Anna Ziegler. The play centered around Rosalind Franklin, a 20th Century scientist, and her efforts to map the contours of the DNA molecule. Anderson is studying costume design at the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University. Construction kicked off for the Kansas Avenue road improvement project on the morning of March 1, according to Edwardsville officials. Currently, road closures are in place for through traffic on Kansas Avenue from the I-435 south bound ramp going west to 98th Street. Traffic going north and south along 98th Street will remain uninterrupted at this time, according to Edwardsville officials. Additionally, Kansas Avenue 400 feet west of the 98th Street intersection has also been closed. Detour routes are labeled. This work represents the first phase of construction.
