The Unified Government Commission tonight changed its casino grant process, after hearing from several organizations against the change. Every year, the UG receives a half-million dollars from the Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway to spend on charitable grants. The vote was 8-1 to change the process to a more direct one where commissioners will be making hands-on decisions about where the funds are spent. Previously, a selection committee recommended the grants that were distributed, then they were voted on by the commission. Commissioner Jane Philbrook voted no on the change, and Mayor Mark Holland also was opposed to it. Among…
A chart from the KHA was shown during a news conference Wednesday morning that showed Wyandotte and Johnson county cases with large increases recently, compared to other counties in northeast Kansas. Wyandotte County reported 3,151 total cumulative cases at noon on Wednesday, an increase of 37 since 1 p.m. Tuesday, according to the UG’s COVID-19 webpage. The number of total deaths was the same as Tuesday, with no increase, at 88. A car struck the bridge concrete barrier at 1:38 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, on eastbound I-70 near the Park Drive exit. According to a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report, a Mitsubishi Eclipse was eastbound in the left lane of I-70 when the driver swerved to the right and crossed three lanes, hitting the bridge concrete barrier. The 24-year-old driver, a resident of Kansas City, Kansas, had a possible minor injury and was taken to the hospital, according to the trooper’s report.
A car show fundraiser is planned from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at 1110 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The event is a fundraiser for the Community Baptist Church of Kansas City, which is across the street from the parking lot. Funds are being raised to renovate the church. Admission to the show car is $5. The cost is $25 to register a vehicle in the car show. There will be prizes for best in show, originality, best paint job and best sound system. A car ran into a barrier wall while trying to avoid a semi on westbound I-70 at 10:50 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, according to a Kansas Turnpike Authority trooper’s report. A Pontiac Grand Prix was westbound on I-70 when it made an avoiding maneuver to keep from hitting a semi, the trooper’s report stated. Then the car hit the inside barrier wall, the trooper’s report stated. The driver, a 38-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, woman, was injured and taken to a hospital, according to the trooper’s report.
A car overturned this morning on U.S. 73 near Parallel Parkway, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol trooperâs report. The accident happened at 6:17 a.m. May 1. A Saturn northbound on U.S. 73 tried to avoid an unknown vehicle, and the driver of the Saturn lost control, according to the trooperâs report. The Saturn then entered the median and overturned, the report stated. The driver of the Saturn, a 32-year-old Lawrence man, was taken to the hospital with a possible injury, according to the report.
A car overturned in a crash at 3:29 p.m. Saturday while merging onto I-70 east from Minnesota Avenue and Washington Boulevard, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol trooperâs report. A 20-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, man lost control of a Toyota Corolla, ran off the road to the right, struck the bridge railing and overturned, according to the report. It was raining on Saturday. The driver was taken to a hospital with a possible minor injury, the report stated.
A Nissan 370 Z was westbound on I-70 east of the Bonner Springs exit when it started to hydroplane on Monday morning, according to a Kansas Turnpike Authority trooperâs report. The driver lost control of the vehicle and the Nissan slid off the road into the right ditch. It went down a steep embankment, hitting milepost sign 226, a Kansas Turnpike Authority fence, and trees, before coming to rest, the trooperâs report stated. A 2003 Mercury was southbound on I-35 south of Southwest Boulevard at 5:50 a.m. Dec. 5 when the driver lost control, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol trooperâs report. The Mercury hit the inside barrier wall, the trooperâs report stated. A 33-year-old Kansas City, Kan., woman driving the vehicle had a possible injury and was taken to the hospital, according to the report.
