Sam Brownback stopped in Kansas City, Kan., today to announce bonding authority to help fund the construction of a new University of Kansas Medical Center education building. Goal is to give member states control over Medicare and Medicaid by Dave Ranney, KHI News Service Topeka — Gov. Sam Brownback has signed into law a bill that might make it possible for Kansas to join a compact of states that want the power to run Medicare and Medicaid within their borders. The new law also creates the possibility that the compact states could circumvent several key provisions in the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. “The Health Care Compact will allow states to restore and protect Medicare for generations to come,” Brownback said in a prepared statement…
Change in federal match rate allows state to shift $17 million in CHIP funding by Stephen Koranda, Dave Ranney, Heartland Health Monitor and KHI News Service Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration on Thursday announced $63 million in changes to the state budget. Much of that comes from increases in federal aid, cost-cutting measures and some services costing less than initially projected. Brownback’s budget director, Shawn Sullivan, outlined the plan in a Statehouse news conference. The biggest single change — $17.6 million — comes from the Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP, which provides health coverage to children in low-income families.…

Chase Briscoe won the ARCA Kansas 150 race Friday night at the Kansas Speedway, and with it, the ARCA championship. It’s the first championship for Briscoe and his team, from Mitchell, Ind. He was driving the No. 77 Ford. Qualifying was canceled because of the misty weather and wet track conditions earlier. Briscoe started on the pole and led throughout the race.
