The Kansas City, Kan., Board of Public Utilities on Dec. 21 approved a 2017 budget of $328 million, about $113 million less than the 2016 budget. It is a reduction of more than 20 percent. According to a BPU spokesman, the decreased budget is mainly the result of lower capital expenditures related to environmental projects addressing state and federal environmental mandates and maintaining existing staffing levels. The Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Public Utilities has won a national bronze award for its corporate communications program in the corporate responsibility category. The BPU was recently named a “Bronze Stevie” award winner in the 2020 American Business Awards. The awards are a national awards program for businesses. A panel of judges recognized the BPU for its continued efforts to better the community and the environment, according to a BPU spokesman. Now lawmakers are contemplating a task force to study what that’s meant for the state’s roads and bridges. Following the borrowing, road projects saw delays across the state. The task force would study the sidelined projects and suggest long-term transportation strategies for Kansas. Bonner Springs High School is holding a Kansas Unified Soccer League Championship tournament Sunday, April 27, for Special Olympics soccer teams. The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 27 at David Jaynes Stadium in Bonner Springs. Opening ceremonies will start at 10:45 a.m. A special guest at the event will be a Sporting Kansas City player.

Matthew Taber, Bonner Springs, Kansas, has been named to the dean’s list at Olivet Nazarene University, Bourbonnais, Illinois. Students on the dean’s list must have a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 grading scale and must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student. Olivet Nazarene University is a Christian, liberal arts university with more than 140 areas of undergraduate and graduate study. There are several campuses, as well as more than 100 learning locations.

Toby Sullivan, 2017 business administration major from Bonner Springs was named to the Culver-Stockton College Dean’s List for work done during the spring 2016 semester. To be named to the Dean’s List, Culver-Stockton College requires students to meet high academic standards. Dean’s List students have earned between a 3.5 and 3.99 GPA and were enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours, with no grade lower than a C. Culver-Stockton College, located in Canton, Mo., is a four-year residential institution in affiliation with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
