Heather Caton of Bonner Springs, Kansas, was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Caton was initiated at University of Missouri-Kansas City. Caton is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. James A. Vaughan The Bonner Springs Police Department has requested and obtained an arrest warrant for James A. Vaughan as a suspect in the aggravated robbery March 15 of Advance America, 609 Tulip, Bonner Springs. Bonner Springs police are asking the public’s help in locating Vaughan. The public is asked not to attempt to apprehend him as in the past he has been known to carry a firearm. George Lingenfelser George Daniel Lingenfelser, 29, Bonner Springs, was found guilty of second-degree murder in connection with the Dec. 7, 2014, shooting death of Janet Billings, his live-in girlfriend. A jury in Wyandotte County District Court handed down the decision after deliberating for more than 11 hours. Billings was shot to death in the parking lot of the Lowe’s store in the 6900 block of State Avenue in Kansas City, Kan. The Bonner Springs City Library will hold its 10th Jazz on the Lake fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Lake of the Forest Clubhouse, Bonner Springs. The event features a dinner, dancing to the Kick Band, a silent auction and a live auction. This year’s theme is “Over the Moon.” In 2015 and 2017, the event raised funds for children’s programming and for the library’s collection, and a special preservation project. Bonner Springs and Edwardsville are planning Christmas tree lighting ceremonies tonight. Bonner Springs will hold the annual Candy Cane Christmas starting at 6:30 p.m. with a parade. The parade will travel from 140 N. Nettleton to Oak Street, then Second Street, ending at Centennial Park. A Bonner Springs driver ran into the back of another vehicle on eastbound I-435 near Lackman Road in Lenexa, Kan. The accident happened shortly after 9 a.m. April 9. The 30-year-old Bonner Springs man, who was driving a Nissan, had a possible injury, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report. The vehicle in front, an Acura car, was driven by a 66-year-old Olathe, Kan., woman who was injured and taken to a hospital. A passenger, a 23-year-old Olathe, Kan., woman also was injured and taken to a hospital, according to the report.

Edwardsville, Kansas, police officers reported that a body was recovered from the Kansas River about 2 p.m. May 24 at Riverfront Park. Edwardsville EMS declared the person recovered from the river was deceased, according to a news release. According to the news release, the person’s identity is being withheld while officers work to determine the circumstances of the incident and contact the next of kin.

The body of an 11-year-old girl who was pulled under the current of the Kansas River near I-435 and Woodend on Saturday has been discovered today along the river bank in the Turner Diagonal area. According to a Kansas City, Kansas, police spokesman, the girl was identified as Rebecca Van Sui Par of Kansas City, Kansas. Rescue crews were searching earlier today along the Kansas River, and a call came in about 5:30 p.m. Monday from a boater who believed he had spotted her, the spokesman said. Tonight’s Unified Government Commission budget meeting at 5 p.m. is expected to cover some, if not all, of three topics, according to officials at the July 11 budget workshop. The topics expected to come up at Monday’s UG budget workshop are the police body camera project, investment in building security, and water pollution control funds and projects, including pending EPA consent decree requirements, according to Doug Bach, UG administrator. On Thursday, July 11, the UG Commission heard a presentation about debt reduction, finances and taxes.
