Topeka – For the month of October, the state saw an increase in its total tax collections at $552.9 million; 7.1 percent or $36.8 million ahead of estimates. These collections amount to $41.5 million more than October of fiscal year 2019. Individual and corporate income tax collections continued to be more than estimated. The Kansas Supreme Court today affirmed a Wyandotte County District Court sentence of a man for first-degree murder and aggravated robbery. Timothy C. Bryant appealed a denial of his motion to correct an illegal sentence in the case. A jury convicted Bryant in August 2006, and the Supreme Court upheld the convictions on direct appeal in 2008. In a motion to correct an illegal sentence, Bryant argued his sentence was illegal because of changes made to the law after he was sentenced. He also claimed his sentence was unconstitutional. An evacuation has been reported in the Fairfax area, at 300 Kindleberger Road, Kansas City, Kansas, after a tractor-trailer accident, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department. A tractor-trailer ran into a liquid oxygen unit, according to the Fire Department’s social media post. The area has been restricted to fire and law enforcement. Hazmat and fire crews were at the accident. Kindleberger has been closed in the area. The leak has now been shut off, according to authorities. The reading honors Phil Miller, a former Kansas City Kansas Community College faculty member known for his love of poetry and for promoting literary writing through readings. Phil Miller taught English composition and literature at KCKCC as well as creative writing and learning center courses from 1976 until he retired in 2002. The victim of a fatal accident at 2:05 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, on westbound I-70, west of Bonner Springs in Leavenworth County, has been identified, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. The victim was Nathan Pena, 19, of Brookfield, Illinois, according to the trooper’s report. He was driving a Subaru. The accident occurred when another vehicle, a Chevy Tahoe, was traveling westbound on I-70, fleeing from law enforcement, according to the trooper’s report.
