Two public meetings for the northeast area master plan are scheduled today. The meetings are at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Quindaro Community Center, 2726 Brown Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. A former resident of Overland Park, Kansas, pleaded guilty today to aiding and assisting in the preparation and presentation of false income tax returns. The plea was announced by acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg of the Justice Department’s Tax Division and U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Beall for the District of Kansas. According to documents filed with the court, Alfred Reece, 58, owned and operated a tax preparation business in Kansas City. An injury-accident was reported at 8:10 a.m. Oct. 28 on southbound I-635, just south of I-70 in Kansas City, Kansas. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report, a Honda Passport slowed for traffic and was rear-ended by a Hyundai Sonata. The Honda Passport then struck the left barrier wall. The driver of the Honda Passport, a 40-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, woman, was injured and taken to a hospital, the trooper’s report stated. Plans are being made to clean up the algae in Welborn Lake, although currently, funding is a snag. Mixed enrollment results were reported Friday by public Kansas colleges and universities, according to a news release from the Kansas Board of Regents. Seeing increases in enrollment were Fort Hays State University, 3 percent; the University of Kansas, .1 percent; and Wichita State University, 4 percent. Washburn University, Topeka, reported an increase of 1.4 percent. Decreases were reported by Kansas State University, 4.1 percent; Emporia State University. 2.6 percent; and Pittsburg State University, 2.7 percent. A Kansas City, Kan., man was ordered today to repay more than $13,000 to the Kansas Medicaid program after being found guilty of Medicaid fraud, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said. Jasmon Watson, 33, was found guilty in March of one count of Medicaid fraud by a Wyandotte County jury. Judge Bill L. Klapper today ordered Watson to repay $13,077.22 to the Kansas Medicaid Program. Judge Klapper also sentenced Watson to 12 months of probation with an underlying sentence of five months in the Kansas Department of Corrections. A Night Out Against Crime event is planned from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, at the Kansas National Guard Armory, 18th and Ridge Avenue. The event features Kansas City, Kansas, police, fire and sheriff’s personnel who will meet with residents who attend in an effort to improve law enforcement and community relations. There will be booths from neighborhood groups, as well. Also, there will be hot dogs, chips and soda available to those who attend. The event is free and open to the public. Incumbents are doing well in the first group of election returns from the Wyandotte County Election office. They are incomplete, unofficial returns. For the mayor’s race, incumbent Mayor Mark Holland is leading with 2,067 votes, followed by David Alvey with 1,112 and David Haley with 818. Janice Witt has 293 and Keith Jordan, 96. Incumbent Sheriff Donald Ash is leading with 2,194 votes to Celisha Towers’ 968 and Victor Webb, 497.
