Kansas City, Kan., is at the top of the list for safest driving cities in the United States, according to Allstate Insurance. The company issued a news release today stating that the average driver in Kansas City, Kan., will have a collision every 13.3 years, compared to the national average where drivers experience a collision every 10 years. A transformer exploded around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, at the Quindaro Power Plant, according to the Board of Public Utilities spokesman. A fire in connection with the transformer explosion is now out, said David Mehlhaff, BPU spokesman. Because the transformer exploded a little distance from the Quindaro Power Plant, there was no damage to the power plant itself, he added. The power plant is at 3601 N. 12th, Kansas City, Kan. Meyer, who was vice president of the board, recently stepped down for health reasons after 18 years of service on the board. Police are investigating a shooting death that occurred during the night in the 2500 block of Ridge Avenue. The Kansas City, Kan., Police Department responded at 2:34 a.m. May 30 to reports of a shooting. When they arrived, the officers found a woman in the street, dead from apparent gunshot wounds, a police spokesman said. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification and family notification, police said.
