The last day of 2014 may go out as one of the coldest days of the year.
The temperature was 8 degrees at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, with a wind chill of minus 1. Earlier in the morning the wind chill was minus 6.
The National Weather Service warned residents about the sub-zero wind chills across the region.
It will warm up a little bit tonight and also on New Year’s Day.
There is a good chance of wintry precipitation late Friday night through Saturday night, the weather service said.
It is too early to determine potential snowfall totals Friday night and Saturday, although preliminary data indicates that 1 to 2 inches of snow is possible, according to the weather service.

This afternoon’s high will be 22 degrees with sunny skies.
Tonight, it will be partly cloudy with a low around 17.
For New Year’s Day, the weather will be mostly sunny with a high near 34. Thursday night, there will be partly cloudy skies with a low around 25.
On Friday, expect mostly sunny skies with a high near 36. Friday night, there will be a 30 percent chance of snow with a low of 27.
Saturday’s forecast is a 50 percent chance of snow before noon, then a chance of rain and snow. The high will be near 36. Saturday night, the low will be around 13.
Sunday, expect a high near 22. Monday’s high will be near 30.
A Kansas City, Kan., man, Omar D. Maria, 31, was indicted Tuesday by a Clay County, Mo., grand jury for assault on a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action.
Maria was arrested Sunday, Dec. 14, near 19th and Parallel in Kansas City, Kan., and questioned in connection with the shooting of the Pleasant Valley officer, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.
The case was investigated by the Missouri Highway Patrol with assistance from the Clay County prosecutor’s office.
Maria is being held at the Leavenworth, Kan., Detention Center, according to the highway patrol. Bond was set at $1 million.
The Pleasant Valley officer was making a traffic stop at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, on southbound I-35 just north of I-435, on the Missouri side of the metro area, when the suspect vehicle pulled to the shoulder and the driver began shooting toward the officer, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol report of the incident. The officer was hit in the face from a bullet and the suspect fled in his vehicle, the report stated.
Catcher Brian Erie has a new contract with the Kansas City T-Bones.
Erie signed up for another season, according to today’s announcement.
The 25-year-old from Louisville, Ky., hit .236 in 2014 with the T-Bones, when he played in 92 games. He had 70 hits, 41 RBIs, 29 runs and 28 walks.
A clutch hitter, Erie was .362 with runners on base and two outs. He had 22 RBIs in the 47 at-bats as a clutch hitter.
“Erie was a great two-out, two-strike RBI guy last season,” said T-Bones manager John Massarelli in a news release. “On top of that, he established himself as one of the top defensive catchers in the league.”
The T-Bones open the 2015 regular season at home on May 22 against Lincoln.
