The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been once again awarded to the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (for its comprehensive annual financial report.
The certificate of achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by the utility and its management.
The award was presented to Lori Austin, manager of accounting and finance and chief financial officer of BPU, and her entire department.
Judged by an impartial panel of experts, the utility’s CAFR demonstrated a “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and met the highest standards of this program. This is the 35th year in a row BPU has received this distinguished recognition.
The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving approximately 17,500 government finance professionals with offices in Chicago, IL, and Washington, D.C.

Four students from Wyandotte County received honors during the fall semester at Ottawa (Kan.) University.
Those named to the Dean’s List were full-time degree-seeking students who have earned a minimum of 24 credit hours over the preceding two semesters and had earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale.
Those named to the Dean’s Honor Roll were full-time degree-seeking students who have earned a minimum of 12 semester hours during the preceding semester and earned a semester grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

A woman has died from injuries sustained in a car wreck on at 2:20 p.m. Jan. 24 at Highway 7 and Parallel Parkway.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash log, Susan Prucka, 64, of Kansas City, Kan., died Tuesday, Jan. 31.
She sustained injuries in the Jan. 24 crash and was taken to Overland Park Regional Hospital, according to the trooper’s report.
Prucka was driving a 2004 Mercedes Benz vehicle that was southbound on Highway 7. It made a left turn in front of a Ford F-250 truck driven by a 51-year-old Bonner Springs man, according to the trooper’s report. The trooper’s report stated the Mercedes went through a red light and was struck by the truck.
The driver of the Ford truck was injured and taken to a hospital, according to the trooper’s report.
