Kansans safely disposed of more than 6 tons of unused medicines during last week’s National Drug Take-Back Day, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said today.
Kansas law enforcement officers collected 13,245 pounds of medicines at 108 locations throughout the state during last Saturday’s event, according to a report from the federal Drug Enforcement Agency. The total was the largest single-day collection since the program began in 2010. Law enforcement agencies turn the drugs they collect over to the DEA, who safely destroys the medications.
“Kansans clearly recognize the need to ensure safe disposal of unused medications,” Schmidt said. “Thanks to the efforts of local law enforcement and the DEA, more than 6 tons of medications are now out of the medicine cabinets and safe from accidental or intentional misuse.”
Kansans have safely destroyed a total of 76,911 pounds of medications in the 10 collection days that have been held beginning in 2010.
Unused prescriptions can be turned in year-round at many local law enforcement locations. Kansans should contact their local sheriff’s office or police department for more information.
Three students from Wyandotte County are involved in presenting “The Fantasticks” Oct. 8-10 at the University of Saint Mary, Leavenworth.
Tony Clark of Kansas City, Kan., is in the cast for the play. Helping with production are Alyssa Papageorgiou of Kansas City, Kan., and Olivia Hatchel from the Turner area of Kansas City, Kan.
The play will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, through Saturday, Oct. 10, in Xavier Theatre on the USM main campus, 4100 S. 4th St., Leavenworth.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and may be purchased in advance by calling 913-758-6171. The play is not recommended for children. There is no admission charge for USM students, faculty and staff.

Fans will celebrate the Sporting KC’s championship in the U.S. Open Cup with an event this afternoon at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan.
The event will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at Sporting Park. There is no charge.
The team won the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night in Philadelphia, Pa.
The match went into overtime and ended with a penalty kick shootout. Jordi Quintilla, a 21-year-old Sporting KC midfielder, made the winning penalty kick for a 7-6 total score.
